NCC or neurocysticercosis is a parasitic infection. Cysticercosis is a condition caused by the ingestion of eggs of Taenia solium or tapeworm. Infection of the central nervous system is termed as neurocysticercosis. It is commonly seen in developing countries. The number of cysticerci found in brain determines the kind of symptoms. Formation of giant cysts is possible. Pigs are the intermediate host, as they consume the eggs. Consumption of foods contaminated with the eggs of the parasite results in infection.
Their course of action is penetration of the mucosa, passing in the blood stream and entry into the tissues. Headaches, confusion, seizures, problems related to balance, increased pressure in the brain and hydrocephalus or fluid in brain. Cesticidal drugs and corticosteroids prove beneficial. Surgical procedures for the removal of cyst are effective. Long term neurological problems, such as epilepsy and dementia are also common. Fecal and oral contamination is seen. Washing the hands properly, after visiting the toilet is indispensible. Cleaning the private areas, especially after passing stools plays a vital role in treatment. Proper hygiene and cleanliness is essential. Avoid improperly cooked animal foods, especially pork.. Trim your nails, to avoid contamination.
