Tailbone Pain Treatment: Remedies For Treating Pain In Tailbone Area.

Pain in the tailbone or coccyx, also known as coccydynia usually occurs after a bad fall and landing on the tailbone which is made up of several bony segments at the base of the spine. Very often, older people with problems in balancing and are at higher risk of falling face this problem, as are people with arthritis and osteoporosis, which leave the bones weaker. Women too are more at risk since their coccyx faces outwards leaving it more vulnerable. Physical activities such as cycling and rowing which lead to friction and straining of the tailbone can also contribute to this condition. Severe pain in the tailbone is sometimes accompanied with painful bowel movements and for women discomfort during sexual intercourse. While the pain can be treated at home with self-care, it is advisable to also consult a doctor to eliminate other causes and complications.

For immediate relief after the injury, apply an ice pack to the tailbone three to four times a day for 15 to 20 minutes during the first few days after the injury. Avoid sitting for long periods of time since that position stresses the tailbone. However if you have to sit, use a donut shaped pillow, easily available at most medical stores, to keep the injured area away from the hard surface of the chair. Since constipation aggravates bowel pain, ensure that your diet is high in fiber and that you are taking in sufficient liquids to avoid this problem. Also try heat treatment by means of soaking in a hot tub or whirlpool to alleviate the swelling and pain. If the pain is unbearable, painkillers may be prescribed by your doctor.
