Body weight is closely related to the kind of food you eat and the amount of physical labor you put into your normal day-to-day routine. A sedentary lifestyle, which is fast becoming a standard feature of the lives of working people in cities, coupled with faulty eating habits and an unbalanced diet, are chiefly responsible for weight gain. A few basic dietary and lifestyle changes would help you lose weight. Even if you do not have the time to go to a gym regularly, make sure that you set aside some time every day for some form of physical exercise like jogging, swimming or aerobics. Taking short, brisk walks instead of using the car to traverse short distances is also beneficial in helping a person lose weight. Climb up stairs in multistoried buildings instead of using the elevator. In addition, you should also be careful about what you eat. Avoid deep-fried, oily snacks, processed foodstuff rich in saturated fats, sweetened beverages, red meats and alcoholic drinks. Eat small meals at frequent intervals instead of eating just a couple of large meals during the day. This prevents overeating and helps the body assimilate the food you eat uniformly, thereby reducing the chances of weight gain. Do not adopt severe dieting techniques, as the weight lost through such extreme means is regained once you switch back to a normal diet. If you feel hungry between meals, eat fruits and nuts instead of packaged snacks. Including plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and pulses, soy products and yogurt in your diet is also useful in maintaining an optimum body weight.
In addition to these general measures, you may also follow a few home remedies to shed excess body weight. Every morning, mix a teaspoon of honey and the juice of a fresh lemon in a glass of lukewarm water and drink this solution on an empty stomach. Another popular remedy is to add the juice of half a lemon to half a cup of the juice of bitter gourd, and consume this mixture every morning before breakfast. It is also believed that drinking three or four cups of green tea helps prevent weight gain. You should also chew a few fresh curry leaves every morning in order to lose weight naturally. You may also eat a couple of tomatoes every morning to control weight gain. Use cinnamon, black pepper and ginger as condiments in cooked food, as they help prevent weight gain.
