Naturally, the vagina does not smell. It is an odorless organ that keeps itself clean. But if you maintain poor hygiene and have a fungal infection in the vagina, then it can smell. The first thing to do in such a case is to visit a gynecologist and get yourself examined. The doctor will be able to tell you why the vagina has a foul odor and can prescribe medicines accordingly.
Causes of vaginal infections:
- Thrush: This infection is caused by the Candida yeast. Small amounts of Candida live around the vagina. But the vagina also has a lot of harmless bacteria that prevent the Candida from flourishing. However under certain conditions, the Candida can attack the vagina and cause certain infections. Candida generally grows in warm and moist places and it can cause thrush in the mouth and vagina. You might have thrush if you have pain, redness and itchiness outside the vagina.
- Bacterial Vaginosis: A common condition, bacterial Vaginosis or BV is caused due to the increase in the number of bacteria in the vagina. Fishy smelling, grayish vaginal discharge is the main symptom of BV.
- Personal hygiene and douches: Bad personal hygiene and using douches on a regular basis upsets the level of good bacteria in the vagina. This can cause vaginal infections, which in turn can lead to a foul smell in the vagina.
- STDs: Sexually Transmitted Diseases can also cause a bad smell in the vagina.
About vaginal discharge:
The vagina is the canal that connects the exterior part of the female genital with the reproductive system and the uterus. The vagina has a natural acidic pH that can guard it against infections. It is capable of self cleansing which is why douches are completely unnecessary. There are glands in the cervix and vagina that produce fluids that cleanse the vagina of dead cells as they flow out of the body. The discharge keeps the vagina clean and lubricated. While normal vaginal discharge is very slightly milky or otherwise transparent, infected discharge is often yellowish green and thick in consistency. It might be accompanied by itchiness, foul odor and rash.
Tips for personal hygiene:
- Be sure to trim the hair around your vagina. Hair can trap sweat and odors. It might also prevent you from washing the area properly.
- Carry some wipes with you when you go out and after using the bathroom, make sure to use your own wipes instead of the common toilet paper.
- Drink cranberry juice as it can protect you from the harmful bacteria that attack the urinary system.
