An inflammation of the head of the penis and glans (a small rounded structure that is situated at the end of the penis), which is caused by an infection is referred to as Balanitis. The skin covering the head of the penis, known as the foreskin can also be affected by this condition. Balanitis is considered to be a common ailment and has been known to occur at any age, regardless of whether the individual is circumcised or uncircumcised. Fortunately, in most cases, it is not serious and can be successfully prevented with proper hygiene. This condition usually manifests itself in a range of symptoms, which may vary in severity. The most common symptoms associated with Balanitis is reddish, sore, irritated skin around the head of the penis, a noticeable swelling in the head of the penis, presence of a lumpy thick discharge under the foreskin and pain whilst urinating. It is important to note that most of the symptoms are almost identical to other disorders such as thrush or other sexually transmitted diseases. Needless to say, it is extremely important to seek immediate medical attention as your doctor will be able to diagnose the factors responsible for your condition and recommend appropriate treatment.
In most cases, Balanitis is brought on as a result of an infection. Yeast infection is the most common factor responsible for causing Balanitis. Not surprisingly, this infection is also responsible for causing thrush. Normally, bacteria grow rapidly in warm and moist conditions. The area under the foreskin is one such place which is conducive to the growth of bacteria. The bacteria are also likely to grow and lead to an inflammation, if the penis is not dried thoroughly after washing leaving the area moist. Do bear in mind, that if you are unable to retract your foreskin and wash the area beneath it thoroughly, you would be prone to being affected by Balanitis. On the other hand, if you are already suffering from this condition, then you will need to cure your foreskin, in order to treat the condition.
Any treatment for Balanitis is dependent on the factors causing it. The most ideal way to treat this condition is by maintaining proper hygiene. Make sure that you wash the glans of the penis and beneath the foreskin of the penis daily. It is advisable to avoid the use of perfumed shower gels and water with a mild soap is sufficient to clean the penis thoroughly. Remember, to dry your penis well before putting on undergarments. It is recommended that you avoid having sex, or if you must, do so with a condom, in order to prevent the infection from spreading to your partner.
