Kids are highly susceptible to lice infestation due to close physical contact with other children in play groups and schools. Lice thrive on human blood and reside on human skin. They cause itching due to an allergic reaction to their saliva and excreta. Some of the home remedies to prevent and get rid of lice are as follows.
- Blend olive oil with a few drops of tea tree oil and massage on the hair and scalp of your child; leave it for an hour, and then wash it off with a shampoo. Next, rinse the scalp with vinegar; this may be repeated twice. This is one of the more effective remedies in getting rid of lice.
- You can also apply mayonnaise on the scalp and hair strands of the child, slather it just like shampoo and leave it on for 30 minutes. Wash it off with shampoo, and then apply a good conditioner. The oil content of mayonnaise will lubricate your hair, and combing with a lice comb would help remove them from the hair.
- Application of Neem oil also loosens the grip of lice on the hair strands, making it easier to comb them out.
- You can mix tea tree oil in your child’s shampoo and let him/her use this on a regular basis. This is also an effective preventive remedy for lice.
If these remedies do not work for your child, perhaps you should consult a dermatologist.
