Fibroids are non-cancerous growths of cells that are found in the uterus of women belonging to the childbearing age-group. Fibroids start growing out of a single muscle cell and expand in size very slowly over a period of many years. It is believed that the high level of estrogen produced by the body of a woman as a natural part of the menstrual cycle contributes to the growth of these benign tumors. Though the exact cause behind the growth of fibroids is not known, heredity is believed to play a significant role in such cases. Also, women of African descent have been found to be more susceptible to fibroids that those belonging to other races. Women who are overweight are also at a greater risk of developing fibroids than others. The most common symptoms of uterine fibroids are heavy blood discharge during menstrual periods, prolonged menstrual periods and excessive pain and heaviness felt in the pelvic region during periods, and pain in the back and legs. A pelvic examination through MRI, ultrasound or CT scan may reveal irregularities in the shape of the uterus and be diagnosed as a sign of fibroids.
Fibroids usually need to be treated professionally through medical procedures like injections of androgens in order to shrink the timorous growth. It can be treated by means of surgical removal of fibroid using a small optic, electrified fiber, or even removal of a part of the uterus or, in some cases, hysterectomy. There are a few simple home remedies for treating fibroids naturally. It is advised that you should avoid processed foodstuffs and opt for organic foods. You should also consume greater amounts of natural sources of fibers, such as whole grains, cereals, fruits and raw, leafy vegetables. Stay away from breads made from refined flours as they increase the risk of the formation of uterine fibroids. In addition, cut down the consumption of red meats and other foods that are rich in saturated fats, as they tend to raise the level of estrogen in the body and may cause the fibroids to grow bigger. Setting aside some time every day for some form of physical exercise, such as a brisk walk, jogging, cycling, swimming or aerobics could also be of great help.
