There is an all natural product recently on the market called Hedrin. It is extremely effective against both nits and eggs and works by suffocating them.

lice treatment
suggested by Debi on Sunday, February 4, 2007

I am Native american and hate chemicle cures and medicines or pesticides. but wow what a year.. my daughter has come home with lice 5 times this year. I have battled this to no end. I went to the doctor and to my surprise found out that my daughters clean hair was a haven for them, yes they love clean hair. this morning i was braiding her hair and ARGH... so i came here and i did a combp of a few ideas. i put mayo on her hair for 2 hours in a shower cap. Rinsed that with warm water first, then half vinegar and water, rewrapped in the shower cap for an hour. I took it down and got her hairdryer and blew it dry and then some on the hot setting, careful to not burn her head. We went outside after and i gave her her hair brush and told her to brush her hair the 100 strokes paying extra care to the back with her head flipped over. after that i brought her back in and i sat her down with some coconut milk and suave coconut conditioner 50/50 blended and i comber through her hair with a small comb (not nit comb they break her hair) let that set on for 1 hour to condition. and wow coconut milk is a great conditioner btw.. then i let her take a nice hot shower and let the hot water run over her head. When she got out i had a bottle of johnsons baby conditioner (no more tangles stuff) I mixed in 1 tablespoon of tea tree oil and one of lavender oil. I sprayed her hair down and helped her brush it as she blowdried it again. and you know I cannot find one nit.. not one. I dont exactly know which step got them all out, but she had tons. I told her to spray her hair every morning before school with the johnsons mixture for prevention. Worst part of this was the teasing we got from dad and brother. But ill take that over burning her head or lice anyday lol. Oh and when we started all of this. I put some tea tree oil in water and sprayed her bedroom soaked. She cant sleep in there tonignt, cause they will die within 24 hours. But her room sure smells nice too. So the natural way is the best!! Good luck mommies

Do not use Chlorine Bleach for lice. This can burn the hair follicles and cause permanent hair loss. Dr. J

Bleach kills everything...
suggested by Lisa on Sunday, January 14, 2007

I know it is bad but it was the only thing that worked on my daughter years ago. We tried everything and nothing worked. I finally got fed up and a friend of mine told me bleach kills everything. Soooo, it is harsh but... I washed my daughters hair with the warmest water she could stand then poured one cup of bleach over it. We waited 2 minutes and rinsed it out. It was very difficult to rinse, so rinsing took a while. Then we conditioned it very well. She said the bleach did get hot on her head, but if it killed the bugs it was worth it. I belive that was the cleanest I have ever seen her hair. It smelled like clean laundry. I bleached and lysoled everything in the house and I have never had another lice episode in my house since then.

conditioner
suggested by Lynn on Wednesday, January 10, 2007

We recently fostered two children who came infested with lice. After several attempts to get rid of them, the treatment that worked best was hair conditioner. After showering the children lather their heads with any brand of hair conditioner and recieve a combing with lice combs. The conditioner makes it difficult for the lice and eggs to "hang on". We were lice free in seven days with this treatment and with well conditioned hair as the only side effect.

listerine
suggested by gina on Friday, December 29, 2006

this works for lice. get listerine and soak the hair in it. wrap the soaked hair in a shower cap or if you dont have that then use a plastic bag and tie it at the end. after the hour is up then rince with warm water and repeat in 7days. listerine works because of the alchol in it burns the lice.

headlice is an epidemic among school children in this country. the best tretment that i have found in all my years of battling the parasite on my kids head is a prescription preparation called OVIDE which is applied before bed to be washed out in the morning. its very smelly but there is no need to nitpick. it is quite expensive - 80.00 BUT WORTH EVERY PENNY.

The Best Lice cure!!!
suggested by Melissa on Wednesday, December 13, 2006

I have been through this "SEVERAL" times with my daughter! Finally I found the best cure to get rid of the pest!! Soak your childs hair in mayo, cover with a plastic shower cap and leave on for 2 hrs. Rinse out and soak hair in vinegar for 30 min. After that wash the hair with your normal shampoo and very warm water. Comb them out with a lice comb! I promise they will be dead and no long 2 hrs of picking nits out of her hair! They just fall right out! Knock on wood we haven't had an issue since!!
