Lavender Oil Uses

Lavender oil is a type of essential oil. It is obtained by distilling the flower spikes of certain species of lavender flowers. Lavender is fragrant in nature and hence has been used in making potpourris since years. There are two types of lavender oils, the lavender flower oil and the lavender spike oil. Lavender oil has innumerable uses. Lavender oil has healing abilities. It has the ability to relieve pain, remove nervous tension, disinfect scalp and skin, treat respiratory problems and enhance blood circulation. Lavender oil has been used traditionally and essentially in the making of perfumes due to its fragrance and aroma. The oil is also used in a number of aroma therapies and also in a lot of aromatic preparations which make use of it. It can be used individually and can also be blended with other essential oils such as pine, cedar wood, geranium, clary sage and nutmeg. Today it is used in various forms such as aromatherapy oils, gels, infusions, soaps and lotions.

Lavender oil has a lot of health benefits and one of them is that it is beneficial for the nervous system. Lavender oil has a calming fragrance and hence works as a tonic for the nerves. It helps treating migraines, depression, headaches, anxiety, emotional stress and nervous tension. The refreshing aroma of lavender oil removes restlessness, nervous exhaustion and increases mental activity. It also helps induce sleep and hence lavender essential oils are recommended for insomnia. It is also used for hair care. It is known that lavender oil can help get rid of lice, nits and lice eggs. It helps in improving and increasing the blood circulation. It is also recommended to people suffering from hypertension as it helps lower blood pressure.

It is highly recommended by aroma therapists for treating respiratory problems. It is helpful for treating asthma, sinus, congestion, cough, cold, flu, throat infections, whooping cough, laryngitis, bronchitis and tonsillitis. It is either used in the form of vapors or it is applied on the neck, chest and back. It is also used in inhalers and vaporizers for cough and cold. It is also an excellent remedy to relieve pain. It is used against various types of pain, such as sore muscles, muscular aches, tense muscles, rheumatism, backache, sprain and lumbago. A massage with lavender oil can help relieve the pain of the joints. Just like a lot of other essential oils, lavender oil is not recommended for pregnant and breast feeding mothers.
