Age spots are more commonly known as liver spots, brown spots and lentigines. These are nothing but flat, brown or yellow discoloration of the skin. These spots are harmless and are usually found on the back of the hands, neck, arms and faces of people above 40 yrs of age. These spots are not signs of any disorder or not even of a medical complication but can be annoying as they tend to show off a person's age. These spots are caused due to excessive production of melanin in the body. Melanin is that substance which is responsible for the uneven tanning of the skin when exposed to the sun. In a few serious cases, these spots can be a result of impaired liver function or nutritional and dietary deficiencies. As the human body ages, the metabolism of our body change and the liver might get overwhelmed with toxins. When this happens, the liver is unable to get rid of the toxins and hence the age spots or liver spots appear. Lack of antioxidants in the diet and oxidation within the body can also be the factors causing age spots. It takes a lot of years for the formation and appearance of age spots or liver spots and one must realize that their removal or elimination will also take some time.
