Eye Skin Care Tips

by Sam Malone

The skin surrounding our eyes is generally very soft and sensitive and it reflects the general health of the person. While we try various kinds of facials to keep our skin looking supple and healthy, we often tend to ignore the skin around our eyes.

One of the most common problems related to the eye area is dark circles. Dark circles most often are a sign that all is not right with the person, be it diet, health, or any medication that is being taken. Although there are many cosmetic and beauty products that offer coverage and cures for dark circles, sometimes these products can be harsh and can worsen the situation. Additionally, getting to the root of the problem and correcting it is the only way to get rid of dark circles. Nevertheless, there are some skin care home remedies that are perhaps less expensive than commercially available products.

The skin around the eyes is the thinnest and dark circles are nothing but the blood vessels seen through the skin. There are many conditions that can cause dark circles under the eyes such as allergies, eczema, asthma, medication, anemia, liver problems, or fatigue.

Home cures for dark circles

  • A slice of cucumber can be placed on each eye; lay back and rest for 1 to 20 minutes. This is an effective home remedy for dark circles as cucumber cools the tired eyes and removes dryness from the skin around the eyes. The skin around the eyes has less of sebaceous glands and cucumber helps in nourishing and hydrating the skin.
  • A cotton pad dipped in milk can be placed on the eyes for 20 minutes.
  • Mix two or three drops of castor oil or lemon juice in rose water; dip the cotton pads in the mixture and place them on your eyes to relieve dark circles. Castor oil is good for removing the creases on your skin as it helps restoring the oil balance of the skin. Lemon works as an excellent astringent and cleanses the skin.
  • You can begin the day by splashing cold water on the face to stimulate and refresh the eyes. You can do it as often as you can to help refresh the surrounding skin.
  • Massaging the facial skin and under the eyes with almond oil can help get rid of dark circles and other spots on the skin.
  • Slices of raw potatoes also help in clearing the dark circles.

Home tips for facial cleansing and dark circles

  • To start with, get ample rest to rejuvenate your body, especially the skin.
  • Eat plenty of green vegetables and fruit and nuts; meat and fish to provide the needed nutrients for the skin. The lack of nutrition is one of the main reasons for dull and tired looking skin under eyes.
  • Use facial cleansing cotton pads soaked in milk; milk is an excellent cleanser and works effectively to remove makeup as well.
  • The juice of cucumber and lemon can be applied on the face for 15 to 20 minutes and later washed with cold water.
  • One spoon of gram flour, lemon and yoghurt can be mixed and applied on the face. It acts as facial scrub and cleanser and opens the pores to allow your skin to breathe.
  • An excellent home tip for facial cleansing and under eye circles is using honey. Honey is effective antioxidant and heals the skin. Honey mixed with lemon juice is effective cleanser and removes spots.
Consult a dermatologist if you find that the problem is worsening or persisting.
