Epidermal Diseases
by Sam Malone
Skin disorders not only affect the physical health of an individual but also lead to emotional problems like depression and low esteem. Besides, the skin disorders can be a sign of underlying disease. Therefore, proper diagnosis and treatment are essential to address the symptoms and the underlying cause.
The skin is made of three layers – epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous tissue. The epidermis is the thin outer layer of the skin, and the layer beneath epidermis is a thick layer which is known as the dermis. The epidermis is made up of flat and scaly squamous cells. Basal cells are present underneath squamous cells. The amount of melanin present determines the skin color, and melanin is produced by melanocytes that are deposited in the basal cells.
The epidermis is vulnerable to disorders because it is the outermost layer of the body and is more exposed to the environment. Thus, the epidermis is easily affected by infection as well. Most of the conditions affect the melanocytes and the apparent symptom is a change of the skin color. Other common symptoms of an epidermal infection include the following.
- Hyperpigmentation, in which the body produces too much melanin causing skin to become darker than usual.
- Hypopigmentation, in which the body does not produce enough melanin.
- Rashes
- Acne
- Cysts
- Warts
- Eczema
- Psoriasis
- Melanoma
- Vitilgo
- Dermatitis
Causes of Epidermal Diseases
Skin infections and epidermal diseases are mainly caused by lack of nutrition and hygiene. Apart from these causes, bacteria and viruses are other main causes of skin disorders. Skin boils and rashes are developed due to infection of bacteria like staphylococcus. Over exposure to ultraviolet radiation, injury, and genetic predispositions can also lead to epidermal conditions. Hormonal fluctuations also lead to the formation of acne. Food that is rich in sugar and fatty acids also leads to acne formation. Other causes of skin disorders include allergies from foods, chemicals and other common allergens, etc. Digestive disorders also manifest as skin conditions at times.
