Are there any alternative cures for treating rash
(Last Updated: Oct 22, 2007)
A rash is a nonspecific or generic term that is used to refer to a large number of skin outbreaks or inflammations. Rashes can occur in all age groups and are caused by a varying number of viruses and bacteria. Rashes can be classified as infectious and non infectious rashes. Examples of infectious rashes are ringworm, shingles, Chicken pox, and scabies while non infectious rashes include eczema, psoriasis and dry skin problems. Most rashes tend to cause severe itching and they can appear in various forms such as tiny red or pink bumps, flat, raised, tiny clear blisters, small pus boils, circular as in ringworm and so on. A rash can be caused due to various reasons; it could be viral such as chicken pox and shingles, bacterial such as folliculitis, furuncles and abscesses, fungal such as yeast infections and ringworm, or parasitic such as scabies and lice.
A rash however, if not severe, can be treated with several home remedies. One of the most effective and popular remedies for treating a rash is the use of chamomile tea. Boil one cup of water and to this add 2-3 teaspoons of either dried or fresh chamomile flowers. Let this simmer for about 5 minutes, after which strain the water into a container. Once the decoction has cooled it can be used to wash or rinse the affected area. Olive oil is also known to contain therapeutic qualities. Simply apply a few drops of the oil on the rash few times in a day. It will cure the rash by penetrating the skin. Another simple yet effective remedy of treating a rash is the use of aloe vera gel. Apply a generous layer of the gel or aloe pulp on the rash, and let it stay for at least 30 minutes, before rinsing it off with chilled water.
Applying a little baking soda onto the affected area is also known to yield positive results. This treatment will provide you with relief from any irritation while also curing the rash. Adding a cup of oatmeal to warm bath water will also prove to be beneficial. Do not apply any lotion or cosmetics on the rash as it will aggravate the condition. Increase the consumption of food that contains vitamin C. This is because vitamin C has strong antioxidant qualities that will help in combating the rash. Thus consuming citrus fruits would be good as they contain high levels of the vitamin.

A rash can be treated in several ways. The simplest would be by applying olive oil to the affected area. This provides instant relief and also helps in the renewal of the skin. Natural aloe vera - extracted juice from an aloe vera leaf, or aloe vera gel would also have a soothing effect. Aloe vera contains Vitamin E, which is a good anti-oxidant for the skin. Another effective way would be to apply baking powder gently on the rash affected part. This dries your skin in no time and also heals the rash faster. Having an oatmeal bath also relives the irritation, redness or the swelling, which generally happens with rashes. You have to pour just one cup of oatmeal into the bathwater and soak in it for an hour for maximum results. Washing the area with a mixture of lemon juice and rose water or applying a paste of sandalwood with a few drops of lemon juice will keep the skin moisturized and would help in treating the rash effectively. Another useful remedy for healing body rash would be to wash the area with chamomile tea. You have to take a cup of boiling water and add 2-3 tsp of fresh or dried chamomile flowers to it, then strain the decoction and cool it down. Applying a mixture of 10-15 basil leaves, 2 garlic cloves, 1tbsp of olive oil, salt and pepper would also help in healing the rash.
You should also include a lot of vegetables and fruits in your diet. Fruits that are rich in vitamin C, like lime and oranges, should be eaten regularly. The antioxidant properties present in these fruits help fight body rashes.
The treatment for skin rashes generally begins with personal cleanliness and hygiene. It is very important to wash and clean the affected area regularly with a mild body cleanser. The water used for cleansing should be warm and not hot. The skin should be thoroughly dried with a clean towel. Avoid scratching the affected area, instead, take a piece of cotton cloth or a cotton ball, dip it in calcium water or comfrey, and gently rub it on the affected skin area. This would facilitate a calm feeling and help in reducing the itchiness. Refrain from using deodorants, cosmetic, ointments or lotions on the rash. Also, avoid exposing it to direct sunlight but ensure that the affected area is exposed to enough air. Keep the surrounding area clean so that your skin does not come in contact with any irritants or allergens.
