Natural remedies for hypothyroid
Hypothyroidism is the resultant disease of an under-functioning thyroid gland. The thyroid gland affects a large number of functions in the human body and hence, when it malfunctions a number of bodily systems are thrown off balance. This condition affects mostly women and its most common symptoms are fatigue and extreme sensitivity to temperature, particularly low temperatures. The other symptoms include constipation, weight gain, brittle fingernails and hair, and dry skin. As the condition advances, the symptoms may include a deep, hoarse voice, dry facial skin, and abnormal menstruation.
It is not possible to treat hypothyroidism by using home remedies. At the most, a few lifestyle changes may help, such as cutting down your intake of salt, drinking adequate amounts of water, and following a generally healthy diet. A regular intake of iodine is considered beneficial, but you should consult your doctor before increasing your consumption of iodine, as an excess could be harmful.
The only way to tackle hypothyroidism is to address the deficiency itself, by taking a supplement of the thyroid hormone. Unless the cause of your thyroid gland malfunction is temporary, the supplements are a life long requirement. Your doctor will be able to determine for how long you need the supplements, and in what quantities.
