Grapefruit is a tropical citrus fruit that has a large number of health benefits that have been known for decades, although some of its benefits have been slightly exaggerated. One of the earliest champions of the grapefruit was the "grapefruit diet", popular in Hollywood early in the 20th century. Consuming a grapefruit or grapefruit juice with each meal was supposed to help you lose weight and generally improve your health in a number of ways. It is doubtful that the diet was really effective, and there are in fact several critics of the diet, some of whom even say that it could be harmful.
In general however, the grapefruit does have many health benefits. It contains plenty of vitamin C, fiber, and antioxidants, and is also supposed to have antibacterial and antifungal properties. Grapefruit also seems to help lower cholesterol and help prevent kidney stones and certain forms of cancer.
One more effect that grapefruit has is that it enhances either the absorption or potency of certain drugs. However, this is not necessarily a benefit, as it can sometimes result in an overdose. Therefore, if you want to try this, you should first check with the doctor who prescribed your medication.
