Head lice are more annoying when the infestation is temporary and short term. But they can become a complete nuisance when they refuse to leave your locks. It is important that you work at getting rid of them as soon as possible; otherwise they will spread to other members of the home and family too. Mayonnaise is a very useful remedy to get rid of head lice. You can rub it deeply into your scalp and leave it on for about half an hour. Then, wash this off with regular shampoo to which a few drops of tea tree oil have been added. Both these treatments combined can get rid of lice effectively within about two days. Tea tree oil is known for its antiseptic and antifungal properties. It will simply perish the lice as well as their eggs which roost in your head.
Another home remedy is to apply shaving cream to your scalp. You should rub it in thickly, so that it does not foam, and leave it in your hair for about 15 minutes. Wash this off with regular shampoo. You may try this treatment for a week, everyday, and you will see excellent results. Do not, however, use tea tree oil everyday. This can actually harm you. If you are going to be using these remedies for a child, omit it altogether. Another time tested remedy is to apply kerosene to the scalp and wash it off after 20 minutes.
