Swelling of any kind is the body's natural way of dealing with any trauma that it has been subjected to. For any kind of swelling on any part of the body, you must remember the four most basic rules to follow. You must rest adequately, apply ice to your inflammation, use compresses and elevate the swollen part of your body if you can. Together, all of these four measures will translate as the R-I-C-E rule. This is the number one medically suggested method of dealing with inflammation of any kind if you are not planning to use medication.
Other more effective remedies you can use at home to take care of any kind of swelling include making a poultice of grated cucumber, raw potato and enough flour to make a battery mixture. You can also add a few drops of mustard oil to this mix, as it will help heal faster. Apply this to the swollen area and leave it on till it dries. This will draw out the pain and provide relief. Rub the area with arnica tincture, considered miraculous for healing inflammation of all kinds. Alternatively, you can also use iodine tincture, although it will not be nearly as effective as arnica. You can also massage the tender area with olive oil to help you take care of the pain.
