Proper foot care is essential to prevent all kinds of foot infections. Cellulitis is a common bacterial infection of the lower limbs and results in swollen areas, which are tender and red. The affected area is warm and changes in the skin are seen to occur. Lack of treatment, results in extensive spread of infection, thereby making it fatal. Medical attention at the earliest possible is helpful. Streptococcus and staphylococcus are the common causes of bacterial infection. They are most commonly seen in broken areas of skin and surgical wounds. Individuals with HIV, diabetes and those on chemotherapy are at greater risk of developing cellulitis.
Antibiotics given orally or intravenously prove beneficial. Drugs effective against the different strains of bacteria are given. To prevent infection, wash any wounds with soap and water. Antibiotic creams are topically applied. Covering any wound with a bandage and replacing them often is recommended. Any change in your wound, such as pain and redness should be immediately taken care of.
