Stomach ache is a non specific symptom and may be caused by a whole host of factors. Flatulence, acidity and ulcers are some common reasons. For women menstrual cramps and other gynaecological reasons may cause bloating, cramping and pain. A stomach ache should be referred to a doctor in any of the following cases:
- A stomach ache lasts more than 24 hours
- There is vomiting, fever or rectal bleeding
- You have bleeding other than your regular period.
If you have a gastrointestinal upset which is the most common reason for stomach aches, here are some simple natural remedies to give you relief:
- Ease the pressure on your stomach by wearing loose fitting clothes
- Take activated charcoal in tablet form or stir 2-3 tablespoons of activated charcoal powder into a glass of water and drink it up.
- Don't lie down immediately after a meal. If you have a stomach ache lie to your side rather than on your back
- If you feel bloated walk around briskly for about half an hour. Alternatively you can lie on your back and make cycling motions in the air with your legs. This helps release gas.
- Take a peppermint oil capsule. This helps ease heartburn and acidity.
- A teaspoon of ginger juice with honey or ginger tea will aid in soothing your stomach
- A teaspoon of toasted asafetida taken with some yoghurt is good for gas and bloating.
In future try and avoid foods that trigger a tummy upset and wear clothes that do not fit you too tightly at the waist. Try and identify which foods don't agree with you and either eliminate them from your diet completely or try and reduce their intake.
