general information about bilirubin?

I am unclear as to what the exact nature of your query is. I am giving some general information about bilirubin. I hope you find it useful. Bilirubin is a substance which is found in bile. Bile being a substance that is produced by the liver. It is brownish yellow in colour and is created when the liver processes old RBCs. Bilirubin is excreted through feces and gives feces its characteristic brown color.

Bilirubin is of two varieties.

  • Indirect or unconjugated bilirubin.: This is insoluble in water. It travels to the liver via the bloodstream, where it is converted to soluble or direct bilirubin.
  • Direct or conjugated bilirubin. Direct bilirubin is soluble in water and is made out of indirect bilirubin by the liver.

The Bilirubin test measures the quantity of bilirubin in a blood sample. From the blood, values for total and direct bilirubin can be measured. The value for indirect bilirubin is derived by subtracting the direct bilirubin from the total bilirubin.

High bilirubin values indicate some form of liver dysfunction which is usually manifested in the form of jaundice. In Jaundice the skin and eyes may turn yellow. Jaundice can be a result of hepatitis, hemolytic anemia or blockage of bile ducts.

Some home remedies for jaundice are given below:

  • Use very little oil during food preparation and in general reduce your intake of fried and fatty foods.
  • Have plenty of orange juice and barley water
  • Carrot juice is said to be good for jaundice
  • Take 4 gms of Indian gooseberry (Indian Gooseberry) with water for 15-20 days. This is said to be good for the functioning of the liver.
