Several cough suppressants are available in the kitchen. Grapes are a very good expectorant and they will help in clearing up the lungs. Take a cup of grape juice at room temperature with a teaspoon of honey added thrice a day for best results. Taking half a cup of onion juice and two tablespoons of honey will provide the same effect. Onion juice also effectively removes phlegm.
Herbal tea with aniseed, holy basil and ginger added is a very good cough suppressant. Warm carrot juice will help relieve cough. A glass of hot milk with half a teaspoon of turmeric powder also helps suppress cough. The turmeric powder is antiseptic in nature and will help with healing a sore throat. Suck on a piece of dry ginger all day to relieve coughing. A pinch of freshly ground black pepper mixed with a teaspoon of honey and a teaspoon of lime juice will reduce cough. Make a mixture of half a teaspoon each of ginger juice and honey and take it thrice a day. This will help soothe a throat sore due to coughing.
Mix a teaspoon each of cinnamon powder, cardamom powder, ginger powder, black pepper powder and four teaspoons of powdered sugar. Half a teaspoon of this mixture taken twice a day with honey or warm water will help ease soreness. If your throat is sore due to coughing, keep a clove or a cardamom in your mouth overnight. This will help lessen the cough as well.
