Can proteinous food such as tofu predispose to goitre?

Iodine a trace mineral is very important for the normal functioning of the thyroid gland. Certain foods contain goitrogens which tend to interfere with the functioning of thyroid gland these foods mainly include soy foods including tofu, cruciferous vegetables, and millets. But mostly this causes a problem if you are living in the belt where the intake of iodine is low. Low iodine intake when coupled with high goitrogens foods can be a reason for predisposition to goiter. However there are no cases of goiter or other thyroid problem noted in past 40 years in the regions with normal iodine intake and soy based products. The major sources of iodine include milk and fish besides iodized salt, so if you are a vegan and if your iodine stores are marginal then it would be wise to include limited servings of soy products in your diet. But remember not all proteins foods would be a goitrogens and predispose you to goiter.
