Honey, Lemon Juice & Whiskey for Cough

Whiskey is a home remedy which has been used since ages to soothe a sore throat. Though there is no scientific basis to this old folk remedy, it apparently clears a stuffy nose and congestion, reduces cough and helps induce sleep.

Though not recommended for children and teenagers, a combination of honey, lemon juice and whiskey is believed to have helped many people to reduce cough symptoms. There are several ways in which you can make a cough syrup with this combination. One of the methods involves making toddy by combining equal amounts of whiskey, honey and lemon juice (quarter cup each) and heating it in the microwave till piping hot. Sipping on this hot toddy (after it cools down to a tolerable level) is believed to help minimize cough symptoms. If the toddy is too strong for your taste buds, you can add quarter cup of boiling water to dilute the taste.

Also the type of whiskey to be used depends upon the symptoms. Irish whiskey is generally used for a persistent cough, while bourbon is used for a sore throat and congestion.

Like the whiskey remedy, there are several other old folk remedies too which are supposed to help reduce, cough, cold and flu symptoms. One of these other home remedies involves sipping on garlic tea.

To make the tea, peel a couple of garlic cloves, crush and boil them in two cups of water. After it comes to a boil, lower and simmer for fifteen minutes. Strain and sip on this while still warm (not hot). Adding some honey to this mixture will sweeten it.

Cough can also be managed at home with simple self-care techniques. Some tips include:

  • Drink lots of water and other fluids like juices. Hot soups, chicken soup especially, are good for a cough and sore throat.
  • To prevent throwing up after coughing, eat smaller meals more often, rather than two or three big meals.
  • Room vaporization can help soften secretions.
  • A warm bath or a shower can give a lot of relief (for a temporary period) by clearing the lungs and making breathing easier.
  • Avoid smoking
  • Keep your environment free from potential irritants such as fireplace fumes, dust, etc.

  1. It may be a right mixture but whiskey could be excluded. Just mixing honey with lemon juice in warm water also works wonders.
  2. You can add 2 pinches of black pepper and one pinch of clove powder in the above mixture.
  3. Take a homeopathic remedy instead called Drosera 200, 5 pills 2 times daily for 5 days.
  4. If the cough still persists take another remedy called Rumex 200 and spongia 200, 5 pills once bed time on alternate nights for 6 days.
