Iodine a trace mineral is very important for the normal functioning of the thyroid gland. Low dietary iodine when coupled with high goitrogens foods can be a reason for predisposition to goiter. However a treatment of goiter will largely depend on cause and size of the goiter.
- Include foods high in iodine which includes milk, egg, fish, guava, pineapple, strawberries, tomatoes, cucumber, citrus fruits, carrots, onion and lettuce and not to forget iodized salt.
- Make a smooth paste using little water and watercress seeds and apply it on the goiter swelling. Watercress is an excellent source if iodine and when taken internally will also help reduce goiter symptoms.
- Ground flaxseeds in water to make a smooth paste. Heat it and apply over the goiter swelling (don't apply it when it is too hot as it can burn your skin).
- Some neck stretching exercises which involves the thyroid muscles and a brisk walk daily for 30 minutes would also make a difference.
