Home remedy for abscesses in sinus
(Last Updated: Dec 26, 2007)
Sinus problems usually occur due to conditions such as colds and allergies. Many people with sinus problems experience stuffiness of the nose and headaches. These are the symptoms of a sinus infection, also referred to as sinusitis. Sinus infections are a fairly common occurrence and affect many people. The symptoms of sinus problems include headaches in the area around the eyes, cheek bones and forehead. Most people also complain of a stuffed up nose.
A sinus infection is caused by a bacterial infection. The sinus cavities are connected to the nasal passage and allow for movement of the air and mucus. When there is blockage of these cavities, the air become trapped inside and leads to pressure and headache. Any blockage that obstructs the openings of the sinus cavities could lead to sinusitis. An example of such a blockage is a tumor. Snorting of illegal drugs through the nose could also lead to sinusitis. The small hairs or cilia within the nose and sinuses help the movement of mucus out of the nasal passage. When the cilia become damaged due to dryness or smoke, the mucus is unable to move out and becomes a breeding ground for bacteria. Individuals with sinus problems may also experience facial tenderness, sore throat, coughing and cloudy nasal discharge. If the mucus does not clear up, a sinus infection abscess may also develop. An abscess refers to a pocket of pus within a closed space. Sinus infection abscess symptoms include redness and swollen areas around the affected sinus cavity. Sinus abscess symptoms once experienced need to be taken seriously. Nasal drainage that is similar to pus may also occur. Some people may experience an eye socket inflammation caused by sinus infection. In severe cases, the inflammation may lead to an abscess in the orbital area. Sinusitis can also lead to middle ear infections. If these infections are not adequately treated, the bacterial infection could spread and lead to the development of an ear canal abscess. The symptoms of this include swelling, redness, throbbing pain and pus discharge from the ear.
The treatment of sinusitis infection abscess involves the intake of antibiotic medication to get rid of the bacterial infection. Some chronic infections may not respond to medication and in such cases, either a longer course of medication may be prescribed or drainage of the sinus cavity may be recommended. The treatment for sinus problems must be sought in the early stages so that further complications may be avoided.

An abscess is a swollen pus filled lump that develops as part of the body's response to infection. It usually feels warm when touched and can be quite painful. Abscesses develop on the surface of the skin in various parts of the body. Treatment for abscesses usually requires drainage of pus, as only antibiotics do not really help in reducing the growth. In some cases the abscess ruptures and drains on its own, while in other cases it has to be opened and drained by a doctor. When the body is affected by some kind of infection, such as that caused by parasites or bacteria, the body responds through inflammation and formation of pus. This is done so that the infection can be contained within that area itself. Sometimes an abscess can also develop due to the presence of an external substance in the body such as a splinter or a pin. When the sebaceous glands become obstructed, abscesses can also develop. Blockage of hair follicles and sweat glands or injuries to the skin such as punctures can also result in the development of abscesses.
People that suffer from weakened immunity usually are prone to abscesses. There are certain conditions that increase a person's vulnerability to abscesses. These include diabetes, cancer, chemotherapy, kidney failure, leukemia and severe injuries such as burns. The symptoms caused by an abscess depend on the area in which it has occurred, but usually include redness, pain and swelling. As the abscess grows, it may rupture on its own and drainage may take place. If drainage does not take place naturally or through incision, the condition may worsen and the infection can spread to deeper layers of the skin, and maybe even enter the blood. When the infection spreads in severe cases, other symptoms may occur such as fever and nausea, in addition to growing pain and redness.
In sinusitis, there is a buildup of mucus in the sinus cavities. The accumulated mucus provides a breeding ground for bacteria. If the sinus cavities are not cleared and the mucus remains in them, the bacteria is likely to cause infection and an abscess may develop. The ear canal also provides an ideal breeding ground for bacteria and other microorganisms as it is moist and warm. As such abscesses are likely to develop here as well. It is important to undergo a medical examination so that the extent of the condition can be determined. The doctor will advise you whether the abscess should be allowed to drain naturally or if incision is required. You can try inhalation with essential oils such as eucalyptus to aid mucus drainage of the sinuses. Warm compresses are also effective as they stimulate increased circulation of blood in the area, thereby attracting more white blood cells to fight off the infection. Herbal poultices made of herbs such as comfrey, slippery elm and marshmallow root are also known to be helpful in treating abscesses.

There are a number of easily available home solutions within the confines of your kitchen for rendering respite from sinusitis and its consequences. Steam inhalation, nasal drops made from a saline concoction, mild heat coating over the aggravated area, resting quietly in a darkened room, extraction of mustard seeds and water entered drop by drop in the nostrils, consuming the juice of grapes etc. are some of the most ordinarily utilized home curatives that are not only effective but also safe for sinus problems.
Create an atmosphere of steam in the bathroom by letting the water that flows from the shower to get hot enough to haze over the mirror. Else slant over a vessel filled with steamed water and a towel wrapped over your head. The vapors emanated from the vessel must be inhaled as they waft upward.
Slowly blowing each nostril at a time will forbid the force buildup in the ears, which if pushed backwards may go deep into the sinus passages.
Put on moist heat energy over tender sinuses by applying a warm clean cloth that is slightly damp over the eyes and the cheekbones. As you feel the pain ebb away, keep the cloth on the face till it feels cool.
