When the muscle in the leg undergoes an uncontrolled and sudden muscle contraction leg cramps are the result. Many reasons contribute to this kind of muscle spasm and cramps in the leg which include dehydration, an obese child, muscle fatigue, heavy exercises, electrolyte imbalance, or certain medications.
Try the following remedies to relieve leg cramps in children -
- Avoid dehydration in children as it is a very common reason to get leg cramps. Give them enough water or juices which they can drink in school too.
- If your child is obese try to lose weight and maintain an ideal body weight.
- Make sure that they don't indulge in any heavy strenuous activities. Let them start any exercise with a warm up and end with a cool down.
- Make them do simple stretching exercises which involve the leg muscles.
- Give him/her a hot water bath to relax and warm the strained muscle.
- For instant relief a cold compress would work best.
