what are the complications for tonsillitis untreated

The tonsils are situated at the back of the throat and are very important because they protect us against inhaled or even ingested organisms. The tonsils produce antibodies to combat nose and throat infections. However, they tend to get infected easily, especially in the case of children. Symptoms of tonsillitis include a sore throat, swollen tonsils, bad breath, and difficulty swallowing.

To treat tonsillitis, it is recommended that for three days you do not eat any solid foods and drink only liquids. You can also take Vitamin C tablets and the minerals Iodine, Selenium (50mg) & Zinc (15mg) everyday. Using salt-water to gargle with at least three times a day along with anti-inflammatory medications can greatly relieve your symptoms. You can also cure tonsillitis by drinking milk daily. Adding a pinch of tumeric powder and black pepper powder to the milk will soothe your throat and tonsils. If you have a recurring tonsil problem despite the treatment, you can opt for a tonsillectomy, or the surgical removal of your tonsils, after consulting with your doctor.

You must seek medical attention for a persistent case of tonsillitis, because untreated tonsil or throat infections can lead to complications with your heart and kidneys. If tonsillitis remains untreated, a peritonsillar abscess can develop on your tonsils. The abscess can swell and become large enough to obstruct the airway and hence, obstruct your breathing.
