The condition of a burnt tongue is very common and is something that we have all experienced at some point in our lives, either due to haste or carelessness. This condition however, can prove to be rather painful and troublesome. A burnt tongue is caused when we eat or drink something that is too hot. If in case the burn shows no signs of improving over a couple of days and if the pain is extreme, then you may need to call for medical attention. Burns of this nature generally tend to heal on their own accord and do not usually pose to be a serious health hazard.

Here are a few home remedies that you could use to treat a burnt tongue. First and foremost you will need to stop eating any kind of spicy or hot food, till your tongue heals completely. Consume a lot of chilled fruit juices as they will have a soothing effect on your tongue. Drinking chilled water or eating ice cream will also help in soothing the tongue. In short, you need to consume foods that are gentle and easy on the tongue and do not aggravate it further. To reduce pain, place an ice cube on your tongue for a few minutes till it melts. This should be done 3-4 times a day to gain relief from pain. As an alternative, you could also rinse the mouth with cold water; it will work in the same way. Place a used tea bag in the refrigerator to cool. Once it has cooled substantially, place the chilled ice bag on your tongue for 4-5 minutes, till it gets warm. This remedy if performed 2-3 times a day will also help the burn heal faster.

Aloe vera gel is also considered to be a great treatment for burns. Slice an aloe leaf into half and scoop out the gel. Apply a thin layer of the gel on your tongue for a minute, after which rinse it off with chilled water. This will help in treating the burn, while also reducing pain. Cucumber juice can also be used to treat a burn of this nature. Blend a small cucumber and then squeeze out the juice. Apply a liberal layer of the juice onto you tongue for 10-15 minutes and then rinse it off. As an alternative, you could also rinse your mouth with chilled cucumber juice. It will have a soothing effect on the tongue.

  • Take 1 tsp of sugar and keep it on your tongue. Now, stick your tongue to the roof of your mouth and let sugar melt. Repeat this process 2 to 3 times till the burning sensation recedes.
  • Suck on an ice cube till it melts. Do this for 7 to 10 minutes. You can also place a little crushed ice on your tongue and let it melt slowly.
  • Put a thick coat of the cream of milk on your tongue and keep it there for 5 to 7 minutes.
  • Rinse your mouth with cold water for 4 or 5 times. You can also take a gulp of water, keep it in your mouth and spit it out.
  • Try applying a little toothpaste on your tongue for 3 to 4 minutes and then wash it with cold water.
  • Apply a little tea tree oil or chamomile oil to the burn. You can also place a cool tea bag on your tongue for 2 or 3 minutes.
  • Apply some Aloe Vera gel on your tongue and wash it off with ice cold water after 1 or 2 minutes.
  • Apply the juice of cucumber or wash your mouth with it. You can also rinse your mouth with the juice.
