How to take care of an abscess in my mouth

An abscess is caused by the buildup of pus that is the result of a bacterial infection. In the mouth, an abscess usually occurs in the teeth. Tooth abscesses occur in the centre of the tooth and from there the infection can spread to other areas of the mouth such as the gums and the jaws.

There are different causes of tooth abscesses, the most common one being tooth decay. An abscess may also be caused by an injury to the tooth that results in it breaking or chipping. This causes an opening in the enamel that allows bacteria to penetrate and infect the centre of the tooth. Left untreated, the infection is then liable to spread to the gums and the supporting bones.

Once the infection has taken root, pus which comprises of dead tissue, live and dead bacteria and white blood cells, begins to develop. This leads to an inflammation of the tissues causing the typical pain of a toothache which may result in a tooth abscess.

Treatment for a tooth abscess usually involves the use of antibiotics to kill the infection and save the tooth. If treatment commences too late, then there is the risk of complications setting in and the dentist may not be able to save the tooth.

Other home remedies for a tooth abscess focus on providing relief from the pain and swelling caused by the abscess. These include:

  • Salt Water Rinses: Rinses made with warm salt water help to soothe the pain. The salt water is said to act as an antiseptic barrier. It also helps to drain the abscess of pus and blood when there is an eruption in the abscess. Care should be taken not to swallow the liquid. Continuous gargling will help provide drainage for the abscess and provide relief.
  • Over-the-counter pain medications such as acetaminophen and ibuprofen can help take the edge off the pain. Ask your dentist or chemist to recommend a suitable one.
  • Do not place aspirin over the abscess or gums in order to deaden the pain in that region as it may cause further irritation of the tissue and result in mouth ulcers.
  • Apply a hot water compress over the affected area from outside the mouth. You can soak a washcloth in hot water and apply it. Do this for about 15 to 20 minutes at a time.
Do not try to treat a toothache from a tooth abscess without first consulting your dentist.

Take two whole cloves and place them between the offending tooth and your cheek. You might want to chew them a little to release their juices.

Use oil of cloves. You can get it from most drugstores. Put a little of the oil on to some cotton wool and dab it onto the oral abscess. It will numb the pain.

Soak raspberry leaves in hot water for a few minutes and apply directly to the abscess.
