Swollen joints causes and remedies



Swollen joints may be because of chronic conditions such as arthritis or may be an acute problem caused by injury or infection. If the joint is punctured, please consult a doctor urgently. You should also consult a doctor at the earliest if you have any of the following symptoms:

  • The swollen joint is red in color and feels hot to the touch
  • The swelling is more than 6 days old
  • Swelling is accompanied by fever or chills
  • You have arthritis but the type of swelling is different from befor

Some supplements that help reduce swelling and inflammation in joints are listed below.

  • Bromelain: A pineapple extract with anti-inflammatory properties. Some studies show benefits for arthritis
  • Curcumin: A turmeric extract with anti-inflammatory properties. Shows benefit in a variety of diseases resulting from inflammation and also may help reduce the pain in swollen joints due to arthritis
  • Ginger: A natural anti-inflammatory. May be taken fresh or in capsule form
  • Omega 3 fats: Studies show benefit for rheumatoid arthritis, but the does should not exceed3 grams daily.
  • Gamma Linoleic Acid: Has been tested for efficacy in reducing swelling and tenderness in joints and has shown significant reduction in one study. Is available in Evening Primrose Oil and Borage oil.
  • Glucosamine: Helps ease tenderness in joints and helps improve long term mobility in sufferers of osteoarthritis.

All of these supplements will take time to work and one cannot expect immediate results. It may take up to 12 weeks to see a reduction in symptoms so you may need to be patient. Here are some natural remedies to help reduce the pain in the short term:

  • Compresses or Poultices made out of St. John's Wort or Devil's claw root may help ease the swelling and pain
  • Hot fomentation with a wash cloth may work for pain that is not so severe. Apply a hot wet washcloth to the swollen joints and apply gentle pressure. Do this for at least 20 minutes a day.
