Cure burning mouth syndrome

my child's tongue started burning and not sure why or what to do. She is 4 and crying out of control.

This might be due to a condition called burning mouth syndrome. This is a condition accompanied by tongue burning and the same sensation in the lips and mouth. Nutritional deficiencies, oral thrush, xerostomia or dry mouth, menopause and psychological problems give rise to burning mouth syndrome (BMS). In your child's case, it might be due to oral thrush or deficiency of certain nutrients. Visit a pediatrician to diagnose the precise cause. Nerve dysfunction or nerve damage is one more causative factor.

Treatment is individualized, based on the condition and the cause. BMS is also referred to as glossodynia, burning lips syndrome, stomatodynia, scalded mouth syndrome and burning tongue syndrome. Avoid foods that result in allergic reaction. Supplements of zinc, B complex vitamins and iron are recommended under the guidance of a physician. If dry mouth is the cause, drinking of fluids help. Medicines to enhance the production of saliva are also effective. Oral anti fungal medications are advised, in individuals suffering from oral thrush. Baking soda is used to brush, instead of toothpaste. Hot and spicy foods are better avoided. Sucking a cube of ice provides temporary relief.
