Kidney infections are caused when bacteria enter the urinary tract through the urethra and start multiplying, leading to infection. Since the kidneys are a part of the urinary system, kidney infection is basically a type of Urinary Tract Infection. Symptoms of kidney infection include - strong and frequent urge to urinate, abdominal pain, burning sensation while passing urine, cloudy urine with a strong odour, blood in urine, pain in the back, side or groin and even fever. Extreme infection even leads to nausea, vomiting and chills. Infants display symptoms of kidney infection in the form of irritability, loss of appetite, loose bowel movement and bedwetting. If left untreated, kidney infections can enter the bloodstream and become serious.
In order to prevent and treat kidney infections, ensure that your intake of water is adequate and that your diet contains plenty of minerals and Vitamin C. Vitamin C prevents bacterial growth in the bladder and urinary tract. Consume plenty of milk, fresh fruits and vegetable to maintain the alkaline content of your urine and prevent it from becoming too acidic which leads to bacterial growth. Fresh berry juice, especially blue berry and cranberry is very effective in curing infections of the urinary system. Avoid processed, fried and spicy food, caffeine, alcohol, carbonated drinks and cigarettes since they irritate the system. Also avoid any type of artificial sweetener especially aspartame found frequently in beverages and other foods. Apart from this avoid wearing tight undergarments and opt for loose-fitting cotton clothing to allow your body to breathe.
