Any irritation in the throat, caused due to infection or inflammation of the tonsils, leads to a cough which could be dry or coupled with mucus and phlegm. There are several simple home remedies for treating a bad cough. Start by avoiding refined, processed and greasy foods, pickles, soft drinks, candies and ice cream. Gargling with warm water and a pinch of salt helps to soothe the irritation in the throat and speeds the cough treatment. Hot lemon tea and ginger tea offer immense relief for a cough. You can also drink 2 spoons of a mixture made with 1/4th glass of warm water, 3 tablespoons of lemon juice and 1 cup honey. Consumed twice a day this offers relief against the irritation and helps to treat the cough.
Ginger is very good for cough and can also be consumed in the form of juice with honey thrice a day or you can chew a small piece of fresh ginger for a dry cough. A paste of 7 ground almonds, 20 gms each of butter and sugar consumed twice daily also helps to treat dry cough. Similarly turmeric works wonders for a dry cough. It can either be consumed directly or then boiled with a cup of milk and consumed twice a day. Other treatments for cough include drinking freshly extracted onion juice with juice of 1 lemon, 1 cup of boiling water and a spoonful of honey to improve the taste. Onion combats the phlegm and provides immediate relief in a bad cough. Grapes also help in a cough with phlegm, since they act as a natural expectorant and tone the lungs, curing the cough within a few days.
