My thumb nail is not discolored or crumbly but it is starting to pull away from the skin and of course this is painful when I hit it on something...what is this from and what do I do about it. Thank you, Lorraine

Strengthening Nails tips

From what you have described, I would say that it is highly unlikely that you have got any yeast or bacterial infection. In all probability, a couple of hard knocks would have loosened your nail from its nail bed and this has caused it to become sore. Make sure that your nail is cut as short as possible. It is important that you keep your nails as square as possible and just a little rounded at the edges. Cutting too deep in at the ends can give your nails an unsightly "talon" look. More importantly it can lead to extremely painful ingrowths and can leave your nails vulnerable to fungus and yeasts.

Cut your nail short and keep a band aid on it for a week or so to give your nail bed time to heal an to protect it from further bumps. You can also use a nail harder (available at most pharmacies) to strengthen your nail. If you feel that the nail is loose, you can also apply an over the counter anti-fungal cream to ensure that you do not get an infection. This is not a serious problem, but if you ignore it, it can lead to more serious complications.

Weak nails cures

Nails in this condition are often a sign of extreme dryness which may be caused by too much exposure to water and not enough moisturization or general lack of care. The best thing to apply to your nail is olive oil. Wash your thumb in hot water with an herbal soap and apply pure extra virgin olive oil. Cover this and go to sleep. You must also make it a point to keep your nail dry all day. Avoid prolonged exposure to water. If you must have your hands in water for long periods, use heavy oil for moisturizing your skin and nails after you are done with your work and pay special attention to rubbing oil into nails. Try to keep your nail as exposed to fresh air as you can. This will help you tremendously.

Make it a regular routine to clean your nails with a solution of warm water and hydrogen peroxide. You can also use organic vinegar for the same purpose. After this is done, you must effectively moisturize your skin with moisturizer or oil. It is also possible that you have a fungal or bacterial infection, even if your nails are not discoloured. In order to determine this, you need to get a medical examination done. For fungal infections, tea tree oil works best. You need to apply it especially in thick layers under your nails.
