Nail rot is generally of two types nail rot and toe nail rot. This fungal infection of the finger or toe nails is medically known as onychomycosis and cause the nail to turn an ugly yellow and become unnaturally thick. The fungus that affects the nail causes the discoloration and the thickening of nails. The same fungus also causes athlete's foot. It is important that you seek prompt treatment if you have a nail fungal infection, because the fungus is contagious and if the rotting if left untreated the damage will be permanent and you could lose that nail for life.
The fungus basically makes its way into the skin by coming through small cuts and separation between the actual nail and the nail bed. The infection starts to grow when it is repeatedly exposed to warm and humid environments. The places you can contract nail rot are old shoes that have closed toes, swimming pools, public showers, and other people who have the fungal infection. You can treat nail rot through the use of antibiotic medication. When ingested the antibiotic travels through the blood stream and finds and then attacks the fungus that has embedded itself deep in the nail bed. Consult your doctor for further treatment and medication.
