Tapeworm, roundworms, hookworms and threadworms are the most common worms to afflict people. These parasites are contagious but they can be avoided completely by taking a few precautions. Since we know the lifecycles and breeding environments of worms, it obviously follows that if you make sure that you do not come in contact with them you will be completely safe.
Tape worm is generally passed on to human through improperly cooked food especially meats like pork and beef. If you use the same cutting board for both meat and vegetables you are at an increased risk of contracting worms. Roundworms and hookworms are the two types of worms that you can get from an infected pet. If you walk barefoot on contaminated soil, hookworms can enter your body through the soles of your feet.
Make sure that you follow common personal hygiene practices and wash your hands well after you use the lavatory. If you are fond of gardening, make sure that you use double gloves and keep your nails short as Worm larvae can remain under your nails and then get ingested along with your food. Untreated sewage is sometimes used as a fertilizer so make sure that you wash your fruits and vegetables well before you eat them.
