Over-exposure to the sun's ultra-violet rays causes tanning of the skin and over time the skin darkens from its original skin tone and colour. If you are stepping out in the sun, take care not to expose your skin to direct sun. Opt for loose fitting, full-sleeved clothes in cotton or carry an umbrella to protect your self from the sun's rays. Also remember to use a good sunscreen lotion with a high SPF factor, depending on the level of exposure to the sun and your skin's sensitivity to tanning. There are several simple home remedies for tanning which help to reduce the darkening effects of exposure to the sun and restore the skin to its original glowing health.
Rubbing slices of potato on mildly tanned skin helps to reduce the tanning effect. If the tanning is severe and your skin has become quite dark, you should scrub the tanned skin daily with a mixture of sugar, lemon juice and glycerine. Alternately you can apply a mixture of 1 tsp of potato juice and 1 tsp of lemon juice for 15 minutes on the affected parts and rinse it off with cold water. Applying a mixture of 2 tablespoons of honey and the juice of 1 lemon helps to lighten the skin colour. Turmeric is beneficial for the skin and can be applied to the skin in the form of a paste prepared with milk to improve the skin tone. To nourish and cleanse the skin you can apply a mixture of mashed Aloe Vera leaves and the juice of 1 lemon on the affected parts.
