Dandruff?

Dandruff is a condition that is not very well understood, and treating it therefore becomes difficult sometimes. In most cases however, it is possible to get rid of the problem by using some simple home remedies and specialized products that are easily available over the counter.

Dandruff is a condition in which the skin cells on the scalp die and flake off in unusually large numbers (the flakes that build up on the scalp and hair are themselves also commonly called dandruff). The condition is rather harmless, but extremely troublesome as the constant flaking affects the sufferer's appearance and is considered rather unhygienic and dirty by most people. As mentioned before however, dandruff is not dirt, nor is it an organism (many people confuse dandruff and lice).

The causes of dandruff are many, and not all of them are fully agreed upon. To some extent, the problem is thought to be genetic, but it can also be caused by a scalp that is either too oily or too dry. In many cases, a fungal infection is also a factor in causing dandruff to develop.

Among the best home remedies for fungal infections is vinegar, and it usually works for dandruff as well. You should shampoo your hair normally, and after washing it out, rinse your hair with a solution of vinegar and water (in approximately a 1:3 proportion). Tea tree oil is also good for dandruff, and you can apply it several times a week, about an hour before bathing. Today however, there are many very effective anti dandruff shampoos available, and the best way to get rid of dandruff is to use one of these shampoos. Getting rid of dandruff takes time however, so you whatever treatment you use, you will need to continue it for several months. Even after that, you should use the treatment once every week or two to ensure that the dandruff does not return.
