Normally the liver filters and gets rid off any impurities and toxins that are in the body. It processes carbohydrates and proteins and using bile that is stored in the gall bladder it breaks down fats. Gilberts syndrome is not a disease but is a non threatening condition in which the liver can not consistently process bilirubin, which is a yellowish brown pigment present in bile. The effect of this is that the skin and eyes take on a jaundiced appearance despite the otherwise normal functioning of the liver. This condition normally requires no treatment at all.
The condition is believed to be cause by the reduced activity of an enzyme and in most cases the problem is hereditary. Fatigue, tiredness, headaches, poor memory, dizziness, anxiety, nausea, depression, irritability, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), loss of appetite, liver/gallbladder pain, abdominal pain, tremors, stomach pain & cramping, and itchiness are the very commonly reported symptoms. But there are other symptoms like insomnia, panic attacks, difficulty concentrating, hypoglycemic reaction to foods, food intolerances, alcohol intolerance, diarrhoea, abdominal bloating or swelling, labored breathing which are also reported occasionally. In some cases vomiting, acid reflux, swollen lymph nodes, and a bitter or metallic sensation in the mouth have also been reported.
Both SGPT and SGOT levels are found to be elevated in cases of liver disorders and if liver cells are damaged, so the findings of your tests are in keeping with the disorder. Your symptoms of vomiting or feeling like vomiting are not necessarily associated with gilberts syndrome so rule out all other possibilities first. Mild elevation of bilirubin, as is the case in gilberts syndrome, dose not pose a long term risk despite the fact that levels will rise higher if you are fasting and suffer from low sugar levels. Prolonged fasting is therefore best avoided. The bilirubin level never reaches such a high level that it could cause a brain problem or any health issues.
