Iritis is a type of anterior uveitis. This is a condition in which the iris of your eye is completely inflamed. There are two main kinds of iritis that could occur, acute iritis or chronic iritis. Acurte iritis is a relatively mild condition, in the sense that it can heal on its own without any external intervention or treatment. In cases where treatment is provided the condition can improve very rapidly. Chronic iritis on the other hand can persist for months and even years before there is any sign of recovery. Unlike acute iritis this form of iritis is notn very responsive to treatment. Chronic iritis is accompanied by a much greater risk of serious impairment to your vision.
People suffering from ankylosing spondylitis or any HLA-B27 related disorders are at a higher risk and more vulnerable to iritis and iridocyclitis, as well as other forms of inflammation of the uveal tract. Individuals suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn's disease, Behcet's disease, lupus, chronic psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, Reiter's disease, ulcerative colitis, scleroderma and sarcoidosis are also very likely to suffer from the condition. Iritis is generally secondary to another systemic condition, but is mostly the only obvious somatic symptom.
Iritis can at times cause and lead to complications like cataract, glaucoma, corneal calcification, blindness, band keratopathy, posterior uveitis and cystoid macular oedema.
The most common symptoms of the condition are ocular and periorbital pain, photophobia, blurred or cloudy vision, pain in the affected eye even when light is shone into the unaffected eye, a condition that is known as consensual photophobia, reddened eye, white blood cells and protein in the anterior chamber and synechia, which is a condition in which there is an adhesion of the iris to the cornea or lens.
Treatment options are limited to conventional medical approaches, with steroidal and dilating eye drops or pressure reducing eye drops and oral steroids. But as far as I know there are no natural remedies.
