Cold sores in description are painful fluid filled blisters that are small in size and manifest or appear on the mouth, lips or nose of an infected person. The virus that causes these cold sores is known as the herpes simplex virus and is generally of two types and the virus often spreads due to close proximity with the sore or infected saliva. However the viruses can only be transmitted from a live host and cannot spread through a towel or washcloth that the infected person has used

There is no effective and complete cure for the cold sore as the owing to the fact that the body's defenses cannot eliminate the herpes simplex virus completely but there are some preventive measures that you can take when the cold sores do appear. Make sure to always keep the infected area clean. You can also reduce the inflammation by making use of an ice pack to soothe the blisters. There are some forms of medications that are available to treat the cold sores and these can be obtained with a prescription from your doctor.
