Nails are often affected by general health and are indicative of any kind disease. The nail is divided into two parts. The base is known as the cuticle and the actual nail that one clips on a regular basis is the outgrowth of the nail. Infection of the nail is a very vague term. It can be caused by infection of various kinds of fungi or bacteria. Like most other diseases, it is not very easy to pin point the exact cause. Ordinarily various kinds of bacteria are present all over the human body both internally and externally. The infection causing bacteria are normally checked by other bacteria of the defense mechanisms of the immune system of the body. So, generally an infection doesn't occur. The condition results when the immunity of the patient goes low, and these fungi go unchecked. They then form a layer on the surface of the mouth, chiefly the tongue and the palate. This must be shown to the doctor immediately as it may be indicative of a viral infection or an allied sickness. Low immunity may also result from the consumption of steroids and other drugs which suppress the immune system. If the situation isn't remedied by providing immediate medical help, the condition may deteriorate further so the patient must rush to the doctor immediately. In such cases, only medical advice should be taken and home remedies should be generally avoided. If a viral infection is ruled out, only then should home remedies be resorted to. Also, while using home remedies, one has to be consistent and must discontinue their use if the condition is aggravated.
The most efficient remedy pertinent to nail infection is hygiene, if the problem with the immune system is ruled out. You must wash our hands regularly and not just before meals. Moreover, your nails must be regularly clipped. If one nails aren't clipped regularly, the grown nails act as repositories for dirt and other infection causing fungi and bacteria. Also, the infected nail area must be cleaned regularly by washing in hot water or and must be kept as dry as possible as moisture only helps contribute to the infection. Potassium crystals dissolved in hot water can also be used for the same purpose. The juice of mint leaves is said to bring relief to nail infections. As with any other home remedy, one must be consistent with its use. Also, at any point of time, if the condition is aggravated, one should show the doctor immediately.
