Prostrate biopsy is a test which is carried out in order to remove samples of the tissue. The samples of prostrate tissues are examined by the doctors to ascertain if the patient is suffering from cancer. When the doctor carries out a prostrate biopsy what he does is insert a needle in the rectum of the patient or through the section between the anus and the scrotum. The prostrate biopsy hopes to establish if a lump found in the prostate gland is cancerous.
The normal procedure when the prostrate biopsy is carried out is to give the patient antibiotics. The purpose of giving the patient antibiotics is to ensure that he will not suffer from any infection. To further ensure that the patient does not suffer from any infection, the doctors clean the place where the biopsy is to be performed with antiseptic solution. In addition to this the entire area is covered with a cloth which is sterile. In addition to this the doctor ill wear gloves which are sterile. The patient is not allowed to the touch the area that has been so completely sterilized since there is danger of an infection.
Usually prostate biopsy does not cause any problems. It is not considered a high risk procedure. There are some possible problems that a patient who has undergone prostate biopsy may notice. He may suffer from some amount of bleeding. This bleeding could be from the urethra or from the rectum. However, this bleeding is not usually intense enough to be dangerous or pose a threat to the life of the patient. He may also notice that his sperm count is lowered and he suffers from a temporary inability to urinate. A patient who has undergone prostate biopsy can go back to work and to his normal life very soon after this procedure. However, if you have got an infection, then you need to take special care. You should bring this infection to the notice of your doctor. He will be able to help you control it. In the meanwhile, it is not a good idea to touch the infected area. You should ensure that you wash your hands immediately after you have touched the infected part of your body. You should dress in loose clothes since tight clothes are likely chafe against and irritate the skin. Your clothes should be made of natural fibers since synthetic fibers can be harsh on your skin.
