Symptoms and Precautions for Chicken Pox

My husband is suffering from chicken pox. What precautions should I take to prevent my 10 months baby from this disease?

Chicken Pox is very common among children who are a year old and above. It is caused by a virus called varicella zoster and is extremely contagious. Usually babies get their antibodies from the mother while they are in the womb and it is very unlikely for them to get chicken pox in the first year of their life. In rare cases if they do, it would only be a mild case of the disease. To protect your baby it would be best to give him/ her varicella vaccine or an injection of varicella zoster immune globulin.

The symptoms are small reddish spots, which blister and the number increases very fast. This is accompanied by fever and general weakness. For treatment in children if it is a mild case of chicken pox a calamine lotion to sooth the scabs and irritation and paracetamol to treat the fever is generally enough. This is a highly contagious disease and spreads through air and direct contact with an infected person. You could get this by inhaling the air next to an infected person who has just coughed or sneezed or by direct skin contact with an infected person so it would be best if your husband stays in a different room away from you and the baby. Besides taking precautions to protect your baby you also need to protect yourself from it as the baby could get infected through you if you have been in direct contact with the infected person.

You need to take the following precautions:

Keep your husbands personal things like clothes, bedding, soap, etc. separate. In a different room if you can.

Wash your husband's clothes and bed sheets in hot water and give a final rinse in an antiseptic solution.

Clean and mop your house with an antiseptic solution at least 2 times in a day.

Ask your husband to avoid contact with you and your baby until he is fully cured.

Onion and garlic will also help to control the spread of infection. Take a large onion and cut it in half. Keep one half near the pillow of the infected person and the other half near the foot of the bed. This is known to absorb the virus from the air and controls the infection.

Wash a few garlic cloves and peel them. Place one each in all the four corners of your husband's room. Do the same in all the other rooms as well. This greatly helps to control the spread of infection and keeps the air free of the contagious virus. Change the onion and garlic daily, till your husband is fully cured.
