Gout is a condition that is caused due to an increased production of uric acid in the body. This excess of uric acid results in the formation of tiny crystals of urate that get deposited in the tissues of the body and especially the joints. The crystals may get accumulated in the joints over the years and trigger repeated attacks of inflammation in the joints. Recurring gouty arthritis can damage the joint and result in chronic arthritis. Chronic gout can cause deposits of hard lumps of uric acid in and around the joints, and may also lead to destruction of the joint, decreased kidney function and kidney stones. A sudden onset of a hot, red and swollen joint is typical of gout.
A natural remedy that can bring immediate relief is to make a paste of ½ cup activated powdered charcoal, 3 tbsps of finely ground flaxseed and warm water. Apply directly on the affected area and cover with a cloth. You can leave this on overnight or change the dressing every four hours. You may also take ½ tsp of activated charcoal orally thrice a day, in order to lower the level of uric acid. A castor oil pack is also an excellent remedy for treating gout. This can be made by soaking a piece of white flannel in warm castor oil. Squeeze out the excess oil and place it over the affected area. Cover this with a plastic wrap and use a hot water bottle to apply heat. This can be done twice a day for one hour. Alternate hot and cold compresses also serve to reduce the pain. First place a hot compress onto the affected area for three minutes and then follow with a cold compress for half a minute. Taking a tbsp of organic raw apple cider vinegar in a glass of water daily is also helpful as the apple cider vinegar creates an alkaline environment which is effective in treating gout. Cherries contain anthocyanins which are beneficial in alleviating inflammation and bringing down the uric levels in the blood. As such drinking pure cherry juice will go a long way in helping you deal with gout. An intake of flaxseed, walnuts, other sources of omega-3 fatty acids and also vitamin E limits the production of leukotrienes which can cause inflammation. Another way to reduce uric acid is to cook 1 tbsp of celery seeds in 2 cups of water. After the seeds become soft, strain the water and drink half a cup four times a day.

I have quite a list of things that you can try and see if they are helpful to you in dealing with your pain and in improving your gout.
To alleviate pain:
For immediate relief make a charcoal/flaxseed poultice. Mix 1/2 cup activated powdered charcoal and 3 tablespoons finely ground flaxseed. Add warm water until you create a paste. Put paste directly on the affected area and cover with cloth or plastic. Change the dressing every four hours or leave on over night. Be careful as charcoal can stain your bedding or clothing.
You can also take activated charcoal orally to lower uric acid levels. Take 1/2 teaspoon when you first wake up, at mid-morning, at mid-afternoon and again at bedtime.
Use a castor oil pack. Soak a piece of white flannel in warm castor oil, wring it out excess and place over the affected area. Cover it with plastic wrap and apply heat using a heating pad or hot water bottle. Do this twice daily for about one hour.
Alternate hot and cold applications to alleviate pain. Soak in hot water first for three minutes and then in cold water for a half minute. Do this about three times.
Here are some suggestions that might be helpful in improving your gout:
Take one tablespoon of organic raw apple cider vinegar in a glass of water twice a day. ACV creates a more alkaline environment which is beneficial in improving gout. Drink 100% cherry juice. Cherries contain anthocyanins that are effective in reducing inflammation and reducing uric acid levels in your blood.
Eat flaxseed, walnuts and other sources of omega-3 fatty acids as well as vitamin E as they limit the production of leukotrienes that can cause inflammation.
You can take the herb Devil's Claw. It is a powerful anti-inflammatory. Do not take if you have stomach ulcers or a heart condition.
You can take another herb called Boswellia. It is known to relieve pain and inflammation.
Eat strawberries, blueberries, goji berres and cherries whenever possible.
Cook 1 tablespoon of celery seeds in 2 cups of water. When seeds become soft then drain and keep the water. Drink half a cup 4 times a day. Celery seeds reduce uric acid.

A simple remedy which has worked for many of my patients is 3-4 glasses of black cherry juice (concentrate works best) daily until your symptoms resolve. Try to find 100% juice with the lowest amount of sugar.
