The most natural thing to do is, immediately wash the area where you touched poison oak or poison ivy with soap and water. Do this at least 3 times. This will remove most of the poison. You can also rub alcohol on the area. If soap and alcohol are not available at hand, rinse with water over and over again so that it will get rid of at least some of the poison.
Some home remedies which can help you:
- Apply paste made from the leaves and stem of the Jewelweed plant (also called as 'touch-me-not' plant) on the affected area. Wash the infected area as quickly as you can with cool, clean water. And apply the paste.
- When rash appears, rub rind of watermelon, lemon, banana skin or orange to get immediate relief. If itching still continues, make a paste of water and either baking soda or cornstarch.
- Mix equal parts of apple cider vinegar and water. Dab it on the affected skin area with cotton swab and allow to dry. Do this several times as needed for relief.
- Foods that help:
Eat foods rich in vitamin C to boost your healing system. Citrus fruits like oranges, sweet lime, lemons and other fruits like guava, strawberries, indian gooseberry are good sources of vitamin C.
