The affected individual should soak his hand in some cold milk for around 5 minutes and then apply a paste of milk and baking soda over the burning area. This paste has to be left on the hand for around 20 minutes and allowed to dry completely before washing it off. The best results with this treatment are observed if the paste is left overnight on the hands and washed off only the next morning.

Some people have found that even applying toothpaste is highly effective in providing relief from the burning sensation. Care should be taken to avoid touching other parts of the body such as the face and neck with the same hand used to chop the jalapeno as the burning sensation may spread to those parts. The juice of citrus fruits like lemon and oranges are known to provide temporary relief when applied to jalapeno burns. Dairy products like yogurt and buttermilk and even vegetable oil could be used to treat the burning sensation on the skin arising out of handling jalapenos. Some people have stated that even applying mashed overripe bananas and cream on the burning area will help provide relief from the burning sensation.

If your tongue is burning after you consumed jalapeno peppers, try drinking some dairy product such as milk, yogurt or you can even try ice cream. Sugar works for some people too.

If your skin is burning due to contact with peppers, you can try and rub it with a little alcohol and then with milk.

The best way to avoid such probems (wherever possible), of course, is wearong gloves while handling such spicy substances.
