Health advice on Bowel Movement

Since last May I have had 5 to 7 BMs a day. The stools are not loose and there has been no weight loss or pain. I am a vegetarian.

The frequency of bowel movements varies from one individual to another. It is possible to have just one bowel movement a day for many years and then have four to five for no apparent reason. If there are no other symptoms such as stomach pain, diarrhea or blood in the stools, it is most likely not a cause for concern. It is however advisable to talk to a doctor so that any underlying cause may be identified and treated.

There are some natural ways to regulate your bowel movements.

  • Soluble fiber is an important nutrient which is found in several foods such as whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Fiber adds bulk inside the digestive tract and enables proper passage of stools.
  • Another beneficial home remedy for proper bowel movements is lemon. Add the juice of half a lemon to hot water and drink in the morning on an empty stomach. Incorporate this in your daily routine.
  • Herbal teas are known to help in cleansing the colon. Drink a cup of herbal tea daily for quick relief from irregular bowel movements.
  • Exercise regularly as this helps to promote normal bowel movements. It also keeps your fitness levels high.
  • Sometimes frequent bowel movements may occur due to an increase in water intake. Therefore it is advisable to monitor how much water you drink daily.
  • Keep a lookout for any additional symptoms indicative of digestive problems.
  • Try to finish a bowel movement properly. This may help to reduce the frequency of bowel movements.

Were you on enema, laxatives or any other steroids? How did you manage for such a long time? Though there is no weight loss, there are possibilities of malabsorption of nutrients. Have you consulted your physician regarding this issue?
