What you have described is a very common problem called hair ingrowths. Ingrown hair is the name given to hair that curls back and continues to grow below the surface of the skin. People who shave often suffer from this problem. While ingrown hairs start off as minor irritations they can get infected and may leave permanent scars. It is important to deal with an ingrown hair as soon as you spot it. Ingrown hair can cause a mild itching sensation. Scratching your skin- probably absent-mindedly can cause scarring. You have mentioned darkened spots which have probably been formed in this manner.
To treat the ingrown hairs, you will need to exfoliate the upper layer of the skin so that the strand can be freed. This exfoliation will require at least an hour so make sure that you plan your schedule accordingly. Fill a tall bucket with warm water and immerse our legs in it for at least 20 minutes. If the ingrowths are high up on your legs and cannot be immersed, boil a potato and once it has cooled down slightly, mash it. Make sure that the mashed potato is warm but not hot before you apply it to the affected area. Cover the entire affected area in a thick layer of mashed potato and bandage it securely. Allow the bandage to remain on for 20 minutes before you continue. Mashed potato retains heat as well as moisture and is an effective alternative to a warm soak. Wash and blend an avocado along with a teaspoon of honey. Mix a small quantity of this paste with an equal amount of sugar so that you have a thick coarse mixture. Use this as a scrub to exfoliate the area containing the ingrown hairs. Do not use too much pressure but instead concentrate on doing it for as long as possible. This will exfoliate the raised portioned of skin and allow the hair to come loose. You can use a magnifying glass to observe the ingrown strand. Once the all the ingrown hair strands are loose, wash off the scrub with warm water and massage a dollop of broad spectrum anti-microbial cream into the area.
You can use this exfoliating scrub on a daily basis to prevent ingrown hair. Add the juice of a single lemon to this body scrub. Lemon is a natural bleach and so using this scrub regularly will help to get rid of the scars on your legs. If it is too much of a problem to make a new batch of scrub everyday, you can make the avocado and honey paste in advance and keep it refrigerated. To prevent ingrown hair, consider other alternatives such as waxing or tweezing.
