I brush my tongue whenever I brush my teeth. But the color of my tongue is white most of the time. It only becomes slightly red after brushing but turns white after a while. Suggest remedies to maintain its color?

The tongue is the first part of the long digestive tract, so what the tongue looks like is just an indication of the rest of your digestive system and your liver in particular - if you could stand changing your diet you would change the colour of your tongue - not drinking milk, not eating fried foods, drinking plenty of water and freshly squeezed fruit and vegetable juices would be a great place to start, eating plenty of fresh green vegetables, salads and all types of vegetables would help too - fresh fruits will also boost your immune system - even if you only did this for a week you would be amazed at the difference - not only in the appearance of your tongue but also the way you felt - you would feel much better altogether!

- A white coating on the tongue can due to many reasons like use of certain antibiotics or steroids, oral thrush, build up of dead cells or even dehydration.
- Drink plenty of water and keep yourself well hydrated.
- Brush your tongue with a tongue scrapper well from back side too, as most of the buildup accumulates there. Be careful not to be very harsh on your tongue.
- You have not mentioned if you also suffer from halitosis (bad breath) or any pain, as there is a possibility of an infection called oral candidiasis (thrush), which indicates more serious underlying problems like compromised immune function or generalized poor health condition. If not treated on time, the infection can pass to your esophagus, eventually causing pain while swallowing.
- I would suggest you to consult an ENT who would examine you and prescribe an anti fungal treatment if you suffer from this infection.
